For the 20th consecutive year, Brigham and Women's Hospital has made the Honor Roll of Best Hospitals in America, ranking ninth on the 2012 list. The Honor Roll was announced in the publication's July 17 issue.
BWH also ranked among the top 10 in seven categories, including Gynecology, which moved up to the number two spot from three last year. Dana Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center remains at number 5, the same ranking as 2011, which was the first year the institutions were evaluated together for providing specialized care for adults with cancer. Other top 10 specialties include: Cardiology and Heart Surgery (#9), Diabetes and Endocrinology (#7), Nephrology (#6), Pulmonology (#10) and Rheumatology (#5). BWH placed in the top 25 in Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Urology.
"Our presence for the past two decades on the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll serves as a tangible symbol of our dedication to the mission of this great academic medical center," said BW/F President Betsy Nabel, MD. "This ranking is also a clear reflection of the commitment and talent of our staff and employees who, day in and day out, deliver the best, safest care possible to our patients and their families."
Other exciting news for the Partners system is Massachusetts General Hospital's ranking of number one in the nation for the first time in the history of the Honor Roll. BWH and MGH were once again the only hospitals in New England to be on the Honor Roll, making Boston the only city in the country to have more than one hospital in the top 10.
Other Partners members also earned high honors. McLean Hospital ranked second among America's psychiatric programs, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital ranked fifth for rehabilitation centers.
Each year, U.S. News and World Report publishes its list based on clinical outcomes, processes of care, and adequacy of care-related indicators of quality, including patient volume and availability of specialized programs. A total of 16 medical specialties are evaluated.
